Allergies: Healing the Root Cause

Allergies: Healing the Root Cause

Allergies Kapha Vaidya Vishwanath

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year and it’s the 6th leading cause of chronic illness.

An allergy occurs when the body's immune system recognizes a substance as harmful and triggers a reaction to help the body get rid of the substance. The substances that trigger allergies are called allergens.

Allergy symptoms may be mild, such as a skin rash or hives, itchiness, runny nose, watery and red eyes, or a life-threatening anaphylactic shock caused by a bee sting and some foods. Our bodies can become allergic to any substance that it considers harmful. The most common substances are plant pollens, animal dander, many types of molds, dust, mites, foods, and insect venom.

What Does Ayurveda Say About Allergies?

Ayurveda recognizes the main cause of allergies as the accumulation of ama (toxic buildup from improperly digested foods due to weak digestion) combined with low ojas (immunity). There are reasons why allergies are triggered: typically, a genetic predisposition combined with an unhealthy diet and lifestyle habits, mental stress, emotional trauma, seasonal changes, and chronic illness. All of these deplete ojas and weaken the immune system.

When agni (digestive power or metabolism) becomes weak because of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle overtime this will cause the three doshas to be out of balance. This causes ama to accumulate in the tissues of the body. The accumulated ama acts as an allergy antigen that triggers an auto-immune reaction. The auto-immune reaction can manifest anywhere in the body, especially the respiratory system, digestive system, skin, or a combination.

Haridrakhandam is an Ayurvedic herbal powder that relieves allergic reactions. It helps balance all three doshas but is especially useful for disorders related to kapha which is responsible for itching. It also supports allergic conditions related to vata and pitta and helps by removing the excess pitta from the liver. It aids the removal of ama from the digestive track and stimulates agni.

Haridrakhandam is anti-allergic, anti-histaminic and anti-inflammatory formula and is highly recommended for chronic itchy hives or skin disorders characterized by an itching and oozing rash. It is also very useful for blisters caused by a fungal infection. Due to all its properties, Haridrakhandam helps calm the overall histamine reaction that results in itching or burning.
