Frozen shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) is a common disorder that causes pain, stiffness, and loss of the normal range of motion in the shoulder. The resulting disability can be difficult to manage and tends to worsen over time if it's not treated.

Frozen shoulder is closely related to avabahuka in Ayurveda. Avabahuka is a shoulder joint disorder described in the ancient text Acharya Sushruta. The cause of Avabahuka is mainly imbalanced vata dosha and in the later stages, kapha dosha.

According to Acharya Sushruta, vata around the shoulder joint depletes causing the muscles to atrophy and kapha fluid fills up the surrounding tissues. This causes constriction of the blood vessels leading to pain and stiffness of the joint, and ultimately causing the restricted movement of the shoulder joint.

  • Sosha (muscular atrophy)
