Sinusitis is a common condition in which the lining of the sinuses become inflamed. It's usually caused by a viral infection or allergens. The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead. Healthy sinuses are filled with air that can become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. The mucus produced by sinuses usually drains into the nose through small channels.
Case Study
A 54 -year-old female client came into my office with frequent and severe discharge from both sides of the nasal cavity with frequent blockages over the last two years. This condition was always aggravated in both the spring and early winter season and when exposed to a dusty atmosphere. In the morning upon waking, she would sneeze 5-10 times and eventually started losing her sensitivity to smell. The loss of smell was mostly on the left side and is associated with intermittent headaches with moderate intensity.

Client’s Detail Daily Regimen Assessment:
She was indulging in excess sweet and oily foods, sleeping during the daytime, drinking ice-cold water and an excess consumption of milk and milk products. She woke up late in the morning, didn’t exercise and ate ice cream at bedtime.
Due to the above etiology factors, kapha dosha became aggravated, which leads to agnimandhya (slow digestion) which caused ama (toxins) formation. Overtime she started to feel congestion, heaviness and lethargy.
Recommended Diet and Lifestyle Changes:
- Reduce intake of oily and heavy foods
- Advised not to indulge in daytime sleep
- Avoid all kaphavardhaka (kapha aggravating) foods and lifestyle
- Practicing yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) to relax mind
Client was given following supplements:
- Varanadi Kwath tablets
- Dasamulakatutrayadi Kwath tablets
- Dashamula Arishtam
- Anu Oil
- Karpuradi Oil
- Rasnadi Churnam
- Haridrakhandam
Ayurvedic Treatment Protocol:
Sinusitis is a kaphaja vyadhi (kapha dosha disorder) and the client was presenting with agnimandhya (slow digestion) with ama (toxins) formation. Initially she was advised to take Varanadi Kwath tablets to improve her digestive strength and eliminate ama from the amashaya (stomach).
Later Dasamulakatutrayadi Kwath tablets and Dashamula Arishtam were advised to relieve congestion from chest and nasal cavities. Nasya karma (nasal drops) is administered with Anu Oil to improve smell perception. Karpuradi Oil and Rasnadi Churnam are used externally and applied to the head, face, and neck area. Haridrakhandam is given to reduce the itching sensation.
The client remained with the program for a month and started feeling better after 15 days. Slowly, her nasal congestion relieved and she was able to sleep better at night. Sneezing and hyposmia symptoms stopped after 2 months and it took approximately 3 months to relieve all her symptoms. Now the client is asymptomatic. Thanks, Ayurveda!
