Kidney stones are hard, mineralized formations made from chemicals in the urine. Urinary stones are formed when these minerals crystallize. They vary in size and may be as small as a pinhead or as large as a golf ball, which may obstruct the urinary pathway causing painful symptoms.

Kidney stones, also called urinary stones, are mainly formed in the kidneys and there is evidence that humans have been experiencing them since 4000 B.C. The prevention of urinary stones recurring remains a serious problem with human health(1).

The most common symptoms of kidney stones include severe lower back pain, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and bad smelling and cloudy urine. They are the third most common disorder of the urinary system.

Ayurvedic Support for Healing Kidney Stones

Ayurveda refers to this disorder as Mutra Ashmari. Mutra means “urine” and Ashmari means “stones”. Mutra Ashmari is classified under the Ashtamahagada (eight fatal conditions) and is Kaphapradhan Tridoshaja Vyadhi (dominated by kapha biological energy). The mineral formation of stones in the urinary pathway occurs due to the disequilibrium of kapha inhibiting and promoting factors within the urinary system.

Probable Causes of Kidney Stones

Possible causes include not drinking enough water, excess exercise and sweating causing dehydration, obesity and eating foods that are too salty or sweet. Infections and family history may be responsible as well.
