Guggulutiktakam: A Powerful Anti-Inflammatory
Guggulutiktaka Ghritam is a popular product that balances both vata and pitta dosa and Guggulutiktakam Kwatham balances kapha dosa. Another well-known formula Panchatiktam (the five bitter herbs) is a main part of this formula, as well as guggulu. Guggulutiktakam supports the healing of inflammatory skin disorders, anemia, ulcers, thyroid dysfunction, inflammatory bowel disorders, anxiety, mental stress, leucoderma and liver disorders.
Guggulutiktakam cools and soothes inflammation in the body that stems from aggravated pitta dosa, as well as many vata-kapha related skin conditions. Conditions such as psoriasis and arthritis have traditionally been treated with these herbs, which strengthen agni (digestion and metabolism) and purify the blood.
Guggulutiktaka Ghritam and Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (pain in the knee joints) is the most common type of arthritis seen in elderly people in particular. Conventional doctors will usually prescribe calcium compounds, but they don’t usually get rid of the physical pain completely.
A study conducted at L.K. Redekar Ayurveda College and PG Research Centre found that Guggulutiktaka Ghritam could have a powerful healing effect on osteoarthritis. The Ashtanga Hridaya also mentions this ghritam as healing for bone disorders.
In this study, the participants were all between 40 and 80 years of age and diagnosed with osteoarthritis. They were given 20 grams of Guggulutiktaka Ghritam with warm water once a day in the early morning for 45 days. The conclusion of this pilot study found that this ghritam “is an effective medicine in reduction of pain, swelling, tenderness and restrictions to movements without any noxious effect…” (Patil and Manoj, 2013).
Guggulutiktaka’s success with arthritis is based on its ability to balance vata dosa, relieve inflammation and decrease dhatukshaya (depletion of body tissues).
