Ayurvedic Management of Skin Disorders

The skin or the integumentary system is the largest organ of the body and involves the skin, hair, and nails. Ayurveda refers to skin disorders as Kustha, and literally means that which alters the complexion of the body.

According to Caraka Nidānasthāna chapter 7, there are seven major types and eleven minor types of Kustha. Each type is caused by different degrees of tri-doshic vitiation of the skin, blood, lymph, and muscular tissues.

Caraka Identifies Some Causes of Kustha:

  • Extreme temperature changes to the body

  • Eating before the last meal is digested

  • Overeating

  • Improperly cooked foods

  • Suppressing the natural urges

  • Incompatible foods

The varying proportion of vitiated dosha will cause variations of physical features and prognosis. The influence of varying doshic involvement presents with a variety of colors, complexions, pain sensitivity, textures, deformities, discharge, and tactile perception.

Kustha is mostly tri-doshic and considered difficult to manage. It’s important to consult an Ayurvedic Doctor for the most accurate Ayurvedic assessment and management plan.
