5 Ayurvedic Ways To Detoxify

Detoxification Digestive Health Panchakarma

A build-up of toxins is a primary cause of disease, according to Ayurveda. Toxins, also known as Ama, can manifest physically or mentally. Toxins accumulate when we eat food that isn't properly digested and then eliminated. Ama is known as the "mother" of all diseases: arthritis, heart problems, digestive issues, chronic problems, you name it.

Ayurveda recommends 5 steps to eliminate toxins.

1. Nidaan Parivarjaan

The first and most important step to detoxify is to stop doing the things that are creating toxins. Avoid eating again too soon after a meal or eating bad combinations of food. Don't eat leftover food or eat in front of a TV. Don't eat when you are feeling extreme emotions.

2. Ama Pachaan

The second step in complete detoxification is to properly digest and eliminate the toxins that are already present in your body. Panchakarma, Abhyanga, chewing fennel seeds and sipping lukewarm water throughout the day will all help. Panchakarma is especially effective.

3. Agni Deepan

A build-up of toxins makes your agni, or digestive fire, slow and weak. Agni deepan is the natural process that enables the body to rekindle the digestive fire. Chew chopped up fresh ginger along with drinking a cup of lukewarm water 15 minutes before lunch and dinner. Do this every other day for at least a few weeks. Eat at the same time each day and eat cleansing kichari for at least 14 days.

4. Strotoshodhan

By following the first 3 steps, the toxins in your body will be moved further and further closer to elimination by feces, urine or sweat. Take Triphala Churnam every day before going to bed at night along with drinking a cup of milk of warm milk with a spoon of ghee mixed in it. Also consult an Ayurvedic practitioner.

5. Panchakarma

We mentioned Panchakarma before, because this practice is essential in actually detoxifying your body. Panchakarma is a specialized branch and cleansing process in Ayurveda. Not only does it detoxify, but it also strengthens the natural processes of the body, increasing longevity and health. Abhyanga (whole body massage) stimulates the lymph glands which will help in removing toxins through the skin, and it is a simple practice your practitioner will most likely prescribe.

It is also essential to stay hydrated! Without drinking enough water, the body cannot completely detoxify. You can also drink freshly squeezed fruit juice (without adding sugar.) Herbal teas without caffeine are also a good choice as they have the healing effects of the herbs and water for hydration.
