Chitraka Asavam is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine used often in the healing process of many different diseases, especially piles, inflammation and digestive problems1. It is considered one of the most powerful digestive and carminative remedies used in Ayurveda2. It is also used to help treat leucoderma, psoriasis, hemorrhoids, dermatitis and anemia, and is used to aid in healthy weight loss. This is because of its powerful effect on the body. It balances all three Doshas, but it is especially calming for Pitta Dosha because of its ability to detoxify the blood. That’s why its particularly effective in skin diseases.

There are only a few ingredients in traditional Chitraka Asavam. Gomutra, Chitraka, Vyosha, and Kshaudra. Chitraka is the main ingredient in this asavam. It has the qualities of pungency, light, dry, strong and hot. The bark of the white variety is harvested and used in the remedies. It is classified under Deepaneeya, herbs that improve appetite and digestion, Shoola Prashamana, herbs that relieve abdominal pain and Arshoghna (piles)2.

A typical dosage is 2 – 4 tsp. once or twice a day, though it should be taken before eating instead of after.

There are no known side effects associated with this Ayurvedic medicine and it can be taken for a long time on a daily basis. However, if the dose is too high it may cause gastric problems and a burning sensation. If your client already has a sensitive stomach, gastritis and/or peptic ulcers, it is best to avoid this product completely. If any contraindications appear while using it such as very heavy periods, neuropathy, hyperacidity, peptic ulcers, diarrhea or pregnancy, recommend that your client stop taking it immediately. If your client has diabetes they should be sure to closely monitor their blood sugar for the initial four weeks taking this Ayurvedic medicine to make sure it is not increasing BS levels over a healthy amount. 

There are several commonly used product combinations that can help to speed up and deepen the healing process:

  • 2 – 4 tsp. of Chitraka Asavam + 1 – 2 Pravala Bhasmam Capsules is a common recommendation.
  • Leucoderma: 2 – 4 tsp. of Ayaskriti Arishtam + 2 - 4 tsp. of Chitraka Asavam.
  • Skin diseases: 1 – 2 Manjishtadi Kwatham Tablets are taken along with 2 – 4 tsp. of Chitrakasavam.
  • Acne: 1 – 2 tsp. of Nimba Haridradi Churna is administered with 2 – 4 tsp. of Chitrakasava.
