Healing Indigestion with Ayurveda

Healing Indigestion with Ayurveda

Digestive Health

The digestive process must be balanced for good health! Ayurveda has many recommendations to balance digestion and soothe inflamed Doshas. People who have an excess of Vata or Pitta in the body typically have various types of indigestion.

Aggravated Vata leads to irregular Agni (digestive fire), leading to an irregular appetite. You could be starving only once a day, or not at all, or only a couple times a day at off hours. So someone who has an irregular eating schedule is especially prone to an irregular release pattern of digestive juices and enzymes. The irregular release of appetite-promoting enzymes and digestive enzymes leads to a type of indigestion called Vishtabdha Ajeerna. As a result, your digestive capability and health will be disturbed.

Causes of Indigestion

  • An irregular eating schedule
  • Eating too often
  • Eating unhealthy combination of food, such as bananas with milk
  • Stress, rage and grief

Healing Indigestion

The key to a healthy digestive system is balanced Agni. It's important to watch our digestion on a daily basis along with the amount of food you eat every day. There are a few indications that food has been completely digested. When you get up in the morning, you should feel fresh and energetic. Your stomach will not feel stuffed. You will feel ‘light’ instead of heavy and groggy. If you burp, it would be without a bad odor. You would also have two to three eliminations in a day.

Here are a few tips to healing your indigestion:

  • Don’t skip meals
  • Eat your meals at regular intervals
  • Eat breakfast
  • Meditate to relieve stress
  • Take a teaspoon of anise seeds and a pinch of rock salt with warm water twice a day
  • Drink warm water throughout the day
