Benefits & Uses of Lodhra Asavam

Lodhra Asavam (also known as Lodhrasavam or Lodhrasava) is a liquid Ayurvedic product used in the healing process of Meha (diabetes), Aruchi (anorexia), Shvitra (leucoderma), Kushta (skin diseases), Arsha (hemorrhoids), dermal pigmentation, excessive bleeding during menstrual cycles, Pandu (anemia), Grahani (digestive diseases) and Krumi (intestinal worms). It can also be used in your clients that are obese (Sthulata) and working on losing weight.

Lodhrasavam very effectively balances Pitta Dosha, hence its ability to help heal so many different diseases and symptoms. The herb Lodhra itself has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of diseases stemming from both Kapha and Pitta imbalances2. It also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiulcer properties. Traditionally, it is the bark that is used in Ayurvedic medicines. Modern research has shown that it is the Glycosides in the bark that are highly astringent and are said to be resposible for its healing effect2

Dosage & Side Effects

When prescribing Lodhrasavam to your clients, also recommend that they avoid food with sugar as well as milk, rice and ghee. Also advise that they reduce or eradiate for the time being sour and salty food from their diet. For their grains they should eat barley and wheat.

A common dosage recommendation is 2 – 4 tsp. taken once or twice a day after eating. The more severe the disease, typically the higher the dosage is. However, a high dose may cause gastric irritation and constipation so if either of those symptoms appear immediately cut dosage in half or decrease until the irritation or constipation is releived. If your client already has scanty and/or delayed periods, they should avoid this formula. If the client wants to their dose can be mixed with an equal quantity of water and then taken as the taste is strong and can be very unpleasant for some. Lodhrasavam can be used for a long period of time on a daily basis.

For children 5 years and older, this Asavam is safe in low doses - 2 tsp. or less once a day. It is typically advised that pregnant women do not take this remedy, though it can be taken after birth but still during lactation for a short period of time, about 3 months or less.
